Nazi Hunt in South America
The Simon Wiesenthal Center is extending a campaign to search for aged Nazis to South America, where investigators say they believe Aribert Heim, left, in an undated photo, one of the most wanted suspected war criminals, is hiding. The center is offering a $460,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Dr. Heim, known as “Dr. Death” for allegedly performing gruesome medical experiments on concentration camp inmates. If alive, he would be 93. His daughter lives in Chile, and he continues to maintain a bank account in Germany containing more than $1 million, said Efraim Zuroff, the center’s chief Nazi hunter. Mr. Zuroff said “dozens, if not hundreds” of Nazi war criminals were hiding in South America. The countries involved in what the center calls Operation Last Chance are Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.
